PARIS: French champions Paris Saint-Germain said on Monday they have signed highly-rated 19-year-old Portuguese defensive midfielder Joao Neves from Portuguese Primeira Liga side Benfica on a contract until 2029.

Neither PSG nor Benfica disclosed financial details, but The Athletic reported the deal is worth around €60 million ($66 million) with an additional €10 million in potential add-ons.

Neves is a graduate of Benfica’s academy who has played 75 games for the club and has nine caps for the Portuguese national team. He won the Portuguese Super League with Benfica in the 2022-23 season and the Portuguese Super League with Benfica last year.

“Joao is one of the most talented players in Portugal and internationally,” PSG president Nassir Al-Khelaifi said in a statement.

“He is very eager to join PSG and is determined to fight for the jersey – which is what we expect from all our players.

“We will continue to build an exceptional young squad at Paris Saint-Germain – based on teamwork, talent and collective spirit – which is the foundation for a great future for our club.” – Reuters
