A total of 80 students from different parts of Belize and with different educational levels received scholarships from the Social Security Board (SSB) to cover part of their tuition fees.
“I believe we must recognize the important role that education plays in our daily lives and personal development, and the Social Security Administration is pleased to award these 80 scholarships today,” said SSB CEO Deborah Ruiz.

Applicants need to demonstrate financial need, maintain a grade point average of 80 or above, and provide an essay on a given topic.
Every year, SSB receives approximately 300 applications from students across the country, which are reviewed by various stakeholders. This year’s scholarship recipients include 35 high school students, 27 sixth graders and 18 students in vocational and technical fields.

“We see deserving individuals who work hard to meet their daily commitments and maintain their passion; we see their achievements and efforts and believe they will do well in school,” said CEO Ruiz.
Fernando Landerer, 23, from San Ignacio town, who received a scholarship in the vocational and technical field of the SSB, told reporters that he plans to study food management courses at the Cayo Employment Training Center (CET) to become a chef.

“I’m focusing on that at the moment. I’m going to school and working at the same time, so it’s a challenge; but at the same time, I’m trying to focus on my studies as much as possible… I think it’s a life-changing experience because a lot of us struggle when we’re young and whenever these opportunities come, we take them,” he said.
Since its inception in 2001, more than 1,000 Belizean students have benefited from the program.
