Urge to strengthen plans

Strengthen climate adaptation strategies.

The City of Kelowna is expected to present a draft Kelowna Climate Resilience Strategy to council in the next month or two, and the coalition has proposed what it calls “six key actions” that it believes will strengthen the plan.

With many communities in the province facing evacuations due to wildfires and July recording the two hottest days in modern world history, the need for an “effective” greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy has never been more urgent, KCC said in a news release on Wednesday.

The coalition said the city faces significant challenges in meeting its greenhouse gas reduction targets, noting that half of the planned reductions depend on two key factors influenced by senior levels of government.

These include widespread adoption of electric vehicles and the province’s commitment to 100 per cent clean energy by 2030.

The other half was affected by urban architecture and transportation policies, which the city said could be improved.

KCC said it supports the city’s climate reduction strategy, which has been modified to accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, including:

  • Accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles by enhancing charging infrastructure
  • Expanding solar power
  • Scaling up low-carbon buildings initiatives
  • Strengthening and funding transportation
  • Expanding community engagement and mobilization
  • Develop proactive urban planning from a climate perspective

“Kelowna is at a critical juncture in its climate adaptation efforts. Now is our chance to get a world-class, ambitious plan approved,” said coalition member Tom Woshansky.

“By taking these six essential actions, the city can increase the effectiveness of its strategy and better meet the challenges of climate change.”
