It was a feeling of déjà vu for Jason Joseph. Just like in Tokyo three years ago, he had to give up the 110m hurdles in the semifinals. What particularly annoyed him was that the Basel native took 13.43 seconds, still well above his winning time in the preliminaries (13.26 seconds). It hurt because it would have gone to the final. “The first hurdle was good, the rest of the race was a summary of the whole season,” he said. The season was dominated by one thing: Knorz. The 25-year-old couldn’t keep up the pace in the hall. “There was a lack of consistency throughout the season, especially in training,” he said. This was because Joseph had to battle minor injuries (hamstring, Achilles tendon) on several occasions. The bronze medalist of the European Championships in Rome is struggling with this because he felt good after the preliminaries. “I feel ready and I have higher goals.”

On Wednesday, Ditaji Kambundji was in a completely different emotional world. In the past few weeks, the Bernese woman has not competed as a precaution – she also reported a problem with a thigh muscle. But she qualified directly for the 100m hurdles semi-final with a third place in the preliminaries of 12.81. After a strong start, it also showed that Kambundji still has room for improvement. “It wasn’t the best performance, but it was OK. I feel very relieved because I can see that things are going in the right direction.” Friday’s semi-final will reveal the future path for the 22-year-old.
