Parliament rejects bill to increase DCEC independence

Parliament has rejected an amendment proposed by Opposition Leader Dithapelo Keorapetse to a bill that would have made the Directorate of Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) more independent.

In recently introducing the bill, Corapetus stressed the need to reform the public sector and free accountability and oversight agencies from the control of the executive branch.

“Corruption, nepotism and cronyism are endemic in the public sector. They have an adverse impact on efficiency and service delivery. These problems can be attributed to serious deficiencies in leadership and management and weak accountability and oversight systems,” Keorapetse said. He said reforming the DCEC was essential to tackle corruption, which he said had become a notable feature of Botswana’s economy, along with poverty, unemployment and income inequality.
