A Moscow court has rejected a defense appeal against the arrest in absentia of opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s wife Yulia, who was accused of extremist activities, Russian media reported today.
The court said in a statement that since the appeal was not accepted, the detention measures imposed on Navalna on July 9 remain unchanged, according to Interfax.
The defense asked the Court of Appeal to revoke the first instance court’s decision, arguing that it was illegal and without basis.
Lawyers who defended Navalna at his trial did not comment on the verdict. The hearing was closed to the public.
After the Moscow court made the ruling, the first-instance judgment came into effect.
She is reportedly accused of producing and distributing videos on the internet with the aim of discrediting authorities and collecting donations for the Anti-Corruption Foundation, which is designated as an extremist organization in Russia and banned.
According to Interfax sources, Navalny was charged in absentia as part of criminal proceedings under Article 12 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation since 2019, after Alexei Navalny was charged with crimes including extremist organization, fraud and other acts.
On July 11, the Federal Financial Monitoring Service added Navalny to the list of individuals and organizations with information about their involvement in extremist activities or terrorism.
