In an effort to bridge the gap between academia and industry, the roads authority has launched its first graduate traineeship programme, recruiting 14 young engineers.

The two-year project aims to create a sustainable talent stream for road infrastructure development in Lesotho.
The Road Fund has generously provided RM2.5 million to kick-start the internship programme this financial year.
According to Teboho Mokhoane, Director of Road Network Development, the aim of the programme is to provide skills to newly graduated engineers.s? Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
What did he emphasize?used to be? Requiring job seekers to have several years of work experience is a norm in the country, which hinders most people from finding a job.
“We decided to seek help from the government to help close the skills gap for new graduates,” Mr Mockhorn said.
“The programme is specifically for young engineers who studied diploma courses in Lesotho and were later sent abroad by the government to pursue degree courses.
“The road authority wants to have them return home and use their skills here, rather than being taken overseas by other companies.”
After rigorous interviews, 14 candidates were selected. Although they were looking for 18 candidates, Mr Mokhoane explained that they could not find four more suitable candidates among the applicants.
“The programme is not only designed to provide practical experience but also to create a pool of qualified candidates for future employment opportunities in the country. We hope that these young engineers, after completing their internship, will be employed by our organisation or other companies in Lesotho.”
Mr Mokhoane expressed hope that they would soon work out a proper plan with the government to ensure that these interns would be employed once they complete their training.
“We believe that this programme will not only benefit our organisation but will also enhance the growth and development of young engineers in Lesotho,” he added.
One of the selected candidates, Lehlonoholo Seitlheko, expressed gratitude and excitement for being chosen for the programme.
“I feel honored and blessed to have been given this opportunity. The selection criteria was very strict and you could tell they were serious, so to be able to go through that and come out with a win is just a gift.”
He also expressed hope that other companies would follow suit and start similar programs to support young engineers in the country.
“There are a lot ofsNumber of people participating in the interviewsonly 14 are needed, which shows that many of us are still sitting out looking for such opportunities,” he said.
Mr Seitlheko said he was looking forward to gaining valuable experience during the two-year project.
“I am excited to learn and gain new skills that will help me grow professionally. I also hope to achieve a better outcome, which is obviously getting a permanent job after completing my internship.”
He expressed his belief that the project would not only benefit him but would also contribute to the development of infrastructure in Lesotho.
“I thank the Roads Authority for giving me this opportunity and I promise to work hard and make the most of it,” he said.
