An American Marriage by Tayari Jones
The New York Times praised this book, and both Sasha and Meredith recommended it. The novel tells the story of a black man who is wrongly accused and sentenced to five years in prison at the beginning of his marriage. It explores typical marital challenges and the broader issue of racial profiling. The unique letter format between the characters adds depth to their struggle to maintain a connection.

“Nightbitch” by Rachel Yoder
Meredith is excited about the upcoming film Night Bitch, based on the book by Rachel Yoder, which is expected to be released in September or October. The novel has a funny cover with a giant steak, hinting at the novel’s quirky premise: an ambitious artist and new mother believes she is turning into a dog. The book humorously and poignantly explores the shifting identities of motherhood and career.

The Bee Sting by Paul Murray
Sasha was reluctant to recommend The Bee Sting by Paul Murray because the book is so long (650 pages), but she vouches for it as a fast-paced family saga set in rural Ireland post-2008. Different family members recount their struggles, from a depressed teenage girl to a neglected 12-year-old boy. The book balances humor with touching moments, making it Sasha’s favorite summer read.
A Funny Story by Emily Henry
Meredith highlights Funny Story by Emily Henry, a popular author on Bookstagram and BookTok. Henry is known for her humor, and her latest book begins with a dramatic breakup and follows the heroine’s life with the ex-boyfriend of her ex-fiancé’s childhood friend. The book is aimed at female readers aged 16-45 and promises to be lighthearted and funny without being sleazy or overly complicated.

“Alchemy” by S.J. Parris
Sasha’s final recommendation is Alchemy by SJ Parris, a historical thriller set in 16th century Prague. The story follows monk Giordano Bruno as he investigates a murder at the court of the Holy Roman Emperor. The novel delves into historical details, such as the search for the Philosopher’s Stone and what happened to the Jews, making it both fascinating and educational.
All of these books are available at Ernster’s Bookstore – you can pick up any of this month’s great reads in person or order them online. Happy reading, and enjoy your summer adventures with these wonderful books!
