Argentina’s former president charged with intimate partner violence after incriminating material leaked

Earlier the first lady Argentine President Fabiola Yáñez has accused former Argentine President Alberto Fernández of intimate partner violence. Her lawyers announced the news on Tuesday, according to international news agencies. The judge banned Fernández from leaving the country and contacting his ex-wife, who currently lives in Madrid. According to Yáñez, Fernández beat and threatened her, but he denies this. On X.

Yanez decided to go to court after incriminating material was leaked to the Argentine media last week. The center-left former president’s cellphone was seized as he is currently under investigation for fraud. Fernández, along with other Argentine officials, is accused of insurance contract fraud and of misappropriating more than $1 billion in public funds during his presidency (2019-2023).

Reports about Yáñez, 43, also date back to the presidency of Fernández, 65. Yáñez, a former journalist and actress, was pregnant with their now two-year-old son at the time. The two had been separated for several months. The Associated Press reported, based on a court document, that a judge had contacted Yáñez about the information in June. She did not want to press charges at the time, even before the Argentine media broke the news.
