Asif Merchant, a Pakistani man with ties to Iran, has been accused of plotting to assassinate Donald Trump and an American politician.
FBI Director Christopher Wray called the plot a “dangerous assassination plot” originating from Iran. “Foreign-led plots to assassinate any public official or American citizen pose a threat to our national security and the FBI will address them with all its might,” Wray said on Tuesday.
Asif Merchant, 46, is accused of trying to hire a gunman to kill a prominent American official in New York. Former US President Donald Trump was also among the businessman’s assassins, according to CBS News. Republican presidential candidate Trump’s security services were further strengthened in June after the United States investigated an Iranian plot to assassinate Trump.
Merchant was arrested in July and is currently being held in New York City.
According to the Justice Department, Merchant arrived in the United States from Pakistan in April after spending time in Iran. Upon arrival, he contacted a person he believed might be involved in his assassination plot. However, the unnamed person tipped off authorities about Merchant’s intentions.
The businessman reportedly planned to leave the United States before his target was killed, and he would continue to communicate with the killer using code. However, he was eventually arrested by an FBI agent posing as the gunman.
It should be noted that this assassination plot is unrelated to the July 13 attempt to assassinate Trump at the Republican Congressional in Butler, Pennsylvania. It was initiated by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks and was shot by a local spy.
He has faced threats from Tehran since Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force in Iraq, ordered a drone attack in 2020 that targeted Trump and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and several U.S. officials.
