BERLIN, Aug 7 (AP): Part of a hotel building collapsed on the Moselle River in western Germany, killing one person and trapping several others in the rubble, authorities said Wednesday. Four people were rescued hours after the collapse.
Fourteen people were inside the Croft hotel when it collapsed at around 11pm on Tuesday. Police said five people escaped unharmed but nine others were trapped.
By early Wednesday morning, emergency services had confirmed one person was dead but had not yet found a body. At the time, eight people were still believed to be inside the building, some with serious injuries.
More than two hours later, authorities said they had rescued two women, a man and a 2-year-old child, according to Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Their condition was not immediately clear.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing a large cloud of dust when the building collapsed, regional public broadcaster SWR said.
Authorities immediately evacuated 31 people from the area around the damaged building. The cause of the collapse is still unclear.
Police said it was “an extremely demanding deployment as emergency responders had to exercise extreme caution in order to enter the building.” They said there were about 250 emergency responders on the scene, including drone experts, and rescue dogs.
Kreuver is located in a picturesque area on the Moselle River, close to the larger resort town of Traben-Trarbach. The town has approximately 2,200 inhabitants.
