The Rui Guan Ye Foundation (FRC) held on Tuesday at Zhao Guangbiao College a volunteer teaching exhibition entitled “Brilho do Sol nas Montanhas,” showcasing a solidarity project by a group of university students who dedicate themselves twice a year to teaching isolated and vulnerable children in the inland mountainous areas of southwest China’s Guizhou Province.

The exhibition revisits these educational activities through 25 photographs from recent trips, a collection of letters written by the children to the team of volunteer teachers, and other relevant artifacts.

After the opening ceremony, a 25-minute documentary of the same name as the exhibition was screened, followed by a sharing session between Macau Radio Senior Broadcaster and Producer Lisa Lei and some of the project participants.

Supporting Children

Chiu Kuang Piu College (CKPC), one of the ten residential colleges of the University of Macau, celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and houses about 500 students each year in a multidisciplinary collective environment.

“Since December 2018, the CKPC volunteer teaching team has been carrying out volunteer teaching activities at Gantuan Mei’e Primary School in Congjiang Autonomous Region, Guizhou Province, China every winter and summer. Congjiang is one of the poorest areas in Guizhou, and many ethnic minority children are known as “left-behind children” [ao cuidado de familiares]“Because their parents worked far away from home,” the FRC’s description of the exhibition states.

The event in China sees university students “act as big sisters and big brothers during their visits”. Through teaching and small group activities covering subjects such as English, art, PE, music and science, “children learn about the world and how to develop good habits and empathy”. The exhibition can be seen at the FRC Gallery until the 10th of next week.
