3G connections no longer available in Lithuania – Operators Tele2 continues to say goodbye to outdated technology. Dr. Evaldos Stankovicius, Head of Network Planning and Strategy, Tele2It is especially important for prepaid customers to upgrade their old phones as soon as possible. Thousands of them are still in use in the country.
It will prompt you to update your device
“There are still thousands of customers of prepaid services in Lithuania using devices that do not support 4G and newer communication technologies. This means that switching off 3G will lead to a significant drop in the quality of calls and Internet for these users, or in some cases no connection at all. This change is happening all over the world, as 3G is an outdated and no longer efficient technology.” E. Stankovicius.
According to him, there are only about 17,000 prepaid services in the Pildyk network. People who may be affected by the 3G shutdown. Some customers use old touch-tone phones that only connect to 3G or 2G connections. Even with decades-old devices such as Nokia 100, Nokia 1616, Blackberry or iPhone 3, residents have not given up.
“These devices are incompatible with modern communication technologies. Outdated devices can be updated without changing your habits – the collection is full of modern keypad phones with 4G and even 5G connectivity.” E. Stankovicius.
For those who have not updated their devices for a long time or do not remember when they last changed their SIM cards, Tele2 Network Planning and Strategy Manager recommends going to the nearest showroom or contacting your operator. Residents can update their SIM cards for free at the operator’s salon.
New opportunities for residents
3G connections, which appeared at the turn of the century, are gradually losing their relevance – older generations of 3G connections have been completely abandoned or are being shut down in many countries around the world. Among them – the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Hungary, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, Spain, Greece, Japan.
“In order for new technologies to work efficiently and with high quality, and for resources to be sufficient for everyone to use, special frequencies are needed. By retiring older technologies, the frequencies they use can be used more efficiently in 4G and 5G networks. In general, switching off almost obsolete 3G connections will make the most used 4G and 5G connections work better.” E. Stankovicius.
He said that shutting down the 3G communication network will give customers the opportunity to use advanced voice transmission technologies such as VoLTE, which is being used by more and more people and is more convenient. Instead of transmitting voice through ordinary mobile signals, it transmits voice through mobile data. As a result, the voice quality becomes incomparably clear, the delay is reduced, and the overall user experience during voice calls is improved.
