On the morning of January 24, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the UK government must put Article 50 – the formal two-year process for the UK to leave the European Union – to a vote in Parliament. It should not have come to this. Last summer, the Brexiteers won the EU referendum by promising to return sovereignty to Westminster. Theresa May’s attempt to bypass lawmakers was despicable, and wasting time appealing the High Court’s December ruling, which the Supreme Court has now bluntly upheld, was a strategic miscalculation.
