Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili said Russia was preparing to build a new stable naval military base in Abkhazia; “This is not only a problem for us, but also a problem for the security of the Black Sea,” he said.
Salome Zurabishvili, speaking at a press conference for local and international media in the capital Tbilisi, criticised Russia’s decision to open a new permanent military base for the Russian navy on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, which has unilaterally declared independence from Georgia.
Zurabishvili said the Russians had already begun preparations there; “This is a big problem because it is a threat not only to us but to the security of the entire Black Sea,” he said.
Zurabishvili accused Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobachidze and his government of failing to adopt an effective policy toward the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
The president said that Georgian citizenship should be granted to people living in the two regions, adding that interest in Georgia and its conditions has increased among people living in these regions.
