August 6, 2024 – Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López said during the commemorations of the bicentenary of the Battle of Junín that peace will come to the country and approved the recognition and allegiance of Nicolás Maduro as President of the country, re-elected in the elections held on July 28.
The defense minister called for perseverance and love for the motherland in the current situation, as the current conflict “is a war of perception led by the United States.”
He acknowledged the role of the armed forces in respecting the law and accused the rebels of trying to ignore the results of last July 28 elections, in which “the people voted for peace,” saying “peace must prevail.”
In a joint statement with the Interior Ministry, Padrino refuted statements made public the previous day in which former presidential candidate Edmundo González sought to portray himself as the “president-elect.”
In it, he accused those who signed the document of having previously publicly expressed support for military intervention in the country and called for coercive measures against it.
He called the group a “rebel faction” that manipulated and deceived a section of the population into thinking they could win the election, or had actually won it. He called for an end to such actions, which are part of a “well-known script of violence” carried out by “fascist groups known as ‘comanditos'”.
He condemned the destructive actions of these violent groups. He said it was repugnant that they were invited to disregard the law, especially when police and military personnel were among those most affected by the wave of violence. He declared that these incidents would not go unpunished.
Padrino said the calls would not undermine the unity of the armed forces, explaining that “they will guarantee peace and order.”
Finally, he approved of his loyalty to President Nicolás Maduro, who was re-elected President of the Republic. He celebrated the president’s action in filing a lawsuit with the Supreme Court.
Junin Battle Memorial
A statement from Padrino recalled that the Battle of Junín was “an important milestone in the liberation campaign of the South, skillfully commanded by Father of the Nation Simón Bolívar and with the leadership and decisive role of General Antonio José de Sucre”.
In the same sense, he noted that the outcome of that battle represented “the decisive event that ultimately expelled the Spanish who still remained on American territory, while at the same time it produced a series of political changes that would resonate throughout the history of that region of our country.”
The Defense Secretary said the Junín battle “supported the resistance, struggle and efforts of the Southern peoples for independence, thus laying the foundations for the Latin American and Caribbean Integration Initiative, the desired “liberator” of Latin America and the Caribbean.
He insisted that commemorating these events requires “reaffirming commitment to the values that inspired the heroes of independence: freedom, independence, defense of sovereignty, justice and solidarity.”
In the current situation, he called for “joint efforts to build a future of peace, solidarity and cooperation among brotherly countries.”
The victory at the Battle of Junín prepared the way for the final confrontation between the Patriots at Ayacucho. It also solidified the alliance between the liberation forces and demonstrated the effectiveness of the military strategy of Bolivar and his commanders. This victory was key to Peru’s independence and made a decisive contribution to the liberation of other areas of South America still under Spanish control.
