Early shopping in Gaborone

Wherever there are people, there is bound to be trade or some form of exchange. This is exactly what happened in the early days of Botswana’s capital. The commercial history of the first ten to fifteen years is quite interesting.

The establishment of the capital has brought great economic benefits to the surrounding villages of Tlokweng, Gabane, Metsimotlhabe, Mmopane, Oodi and Matebele. These villages are within walking distance and in the early days of the capital, residents here often walked to the capital for shopping.

The villages had few shops to begin with and if there were any it was just a solitary shop like in Matebele and Mmopane. Prices in the local village shops were a bit high to begin with. It was such a relief to arrive in the capital.
