TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Samar Governor Ben Evardone called on the national government to formulate a comprehensive national policy on college internships and allocate a dedicated budget, stressing its importance in producing quality graduates.
Evardone said the national university internship policy will have a significant impact on the country’s education system.
He highlighted the role of internships in human resource development, job matching, networking and overall economic contribution.
“If the national government had a comprehensive internship program and it was supported by budgetary allocations, I believe it would have a more significant impact,” Evadone said during a speech at the launch of the Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) BALUS program in Borongan City on July 29.

BALUS, which stands for Building Alliances and Leveraging Unwavering Support, is an initiative launched by ESSU to strengthen collaboration with Host Training Organizations (HTEs) of student internship programs.
Evardone’s focus on the issue stems from complaints from parents of ESSU students who were forced to sell properties such as farmland and buffaloes to finance their children’s internship needs.
He stressed that students should not be asked to pay for internship facilities as they contribute to the workforce.
“Besides, they are also expected to impart knowledge, transfer skills and build confidence among students,” he added.
Evardone plans to discuss the matter with senators, especially Senate President Francis Escudero, and hopes to get the support of Reps. Ma. Fe Abunda and Marcelino Libanan of the 4Ps partisan group to resolve the issue.
