‘The worst part was morning prayer’ – Sparrow on growing up with a pastor father

Nigerian singer, Spyro, recently shared how growing up as a pastor’s kid has impacted his life and career in an interview with Chude Jideonwo of the Just Chude podcast.

Sparrow recalled that he followed a strict regimen of Bible study and morning prayer, but that these routines often disrupted his sleep. “The worst part was morning prayer. It always seemed to happen when I was in the deepest sleep. It made me think, ‘This God must be trying to ruin my life!'”

He admits that his strict upbringing made him feel like he was in prison, and when he finally got to college, he saw it as a golden opportunity to escape. “It was a crazy experience. When I went to college, I felt like I was finally free. I didn’t go home for four years. I’m so grateful for this opportunity to escape.”

Despite the challenges, Sparrow also acknowledged the positive aspects of his upbringing. He noted that the lessons his parents instilled in him and the fear of God have always stayed with him. “Even though I didn’t like the way they did things, the fear of God has always stayed with me. In college, I always held on to my values, not because of my parents, but because of my inner convictions. I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t chase women. It’s all because of the fear of God that my parents instilled in me.
