A fire broke out in the 14-storey building of Jabir Hotel International located at Chitra Junction in Jessore. The fire incident took place at around 4 pm on Monday (August 5).

Dr. Haroon Or Rashid, director of the 250-bed general hospital in Jessore, told the Dhaka Post that there are currently six bodies in the hospital related to the Jaber Hotel fire. In addition, about 100 people were injured.

The Jessore Fire and Civil Defence emergency call centre informed that the fire department is still working to extinguish the fire at the Jaber International Hotel. However, the fire department is unable to reveal the number of casualties at this time.

Meanwhile, firefighters worked to control the fire until 7:30 p.m. Students also actively cooperated in doing their homework.

“When we were crossing Chitra Junction along with the victory parade, some miscreants behind our procession started the fire incident,” Rashed Khan, regional coordinator of the Student Movement Against Discrimination, said at a press conference at the Jessore Press Club around 5 pm. “We demand that they be identified and brought to justice. No one from our student society was involved in such vandalism and they have never done any vandalism before.”
