PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Dr. Neil Singh, Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Council, says some Venezuelan immigrants are practicing medicine in the country without the necessary permission from the council.
Singh told a local radio program that health care fraud is a global problem and Trinidad and Tobago is not immune.
“A lot of Venezuelans come here to practice medicine… One of the doctors we complained to the anti-fraud team was Venezuelan. He was actually prescribing medicine.
“We don’t know if these people are real doctors, we don’t know what their level of training is, and we don’t know if their level of training meets our basic standards,” Singh said on the show.
“That is why a commission was set up to regulate the profession, to ensure the quality of doctors,” he said, recalling an incident where a woman was taken to court and charged 60,000 TT dollars (1 TT dollar = 0.16 cents), but continued to “practice medicine” the next day, this time without identifying herself as a doctor.

Some Venezuelan nationals have fled to Trinidad and Tobago to escape the political and socioeconomic conditions in the South American country, which the United States has imposed an economic blockade on in protest against President Nicolas Maduro’s election, which it insists was fraudulent.
