Hasina tries to calm Nationwide protests against his government have been underway since early July. But she fled the country after nearly 100 people were killed on Sunday.

Miller said the U.S. has seen reports that the military is resisting further pressure to crack down on student-led demonstrations.

“If the military does reject calls to crack down on legitimate protesters, that would be a positive development,” he said.

“We welcome the formation of an interim government and urge that any transition be conducted in accordance with Bangladeshi law,” he said.

Asked whether the military should choose the next leader, Miller said: “We want to see the people of Bangladesh decide the future government of Bangladesh.”

He said the United States was also “deeply saddened by reports of human rights violations and loss of life over the weekend and over the past few weeks.”

“We must have a full, transparent investigation to ensure accountability for these deaths,” Miller said.
