“This is a chance to prove Taiwan’s strength and establish its international status… China suppresses us in every field, and we can’t even use our official name at the Olympics but can only be called Chinese Taipei. So our players are helping us gain recognition,” supporter Lai added.
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, who took office in May, called Wang’s father.
Lai Changxing thanked Wang Qiang and Lee Chong Wei for fighting hard in the Olympics, defeating their Chinese opponents twice and winning consecutive gold medals.
“They are the glory of the country,” said Lai Changxing, who is labeled a “separatist” by China and has undermined cross-strait peace.
Taiwan’s Vice Premier Zheng Liqun told the audience at the Taipei station that Wang Qishan and Lee Ryong-hai’s success demonstrated the Taiwanese spirit and “let the world see Taiwan.”
“I hope one day we can bravely hold up our flag at an international event without it being taken away,” said Danny Tsai, a 36-year-old Taipei local who was in the crowd.
