The white sandy beach at the foot of the Eiffel Tower brings good luck to the Swiss beach volleyball players. Nine hours after Esme Bobner and Zoe Vergé-Despres advanced to the quarterfinals, Tanja Huberli and Nina Brenner followed closely behind. The Swiss top-ranked players defeated the Spanish duo Liliana Fernandez and Paula Soria 23:21, 21:16. As in all three group matches, Huberli and Brenner did not lose a set.
Huberli is weak, Brenner shines
However, the round of 16 match against Fernandez/Soria was very tough. Hubeli did not play well, had difficulty receiving the ball and sometimes struggled in attack. On the other hand, Brunner played well in both defense and offense. She made almost no mistakes and kept a cool head even in the crucial moments. Brunner led the duo to the next round.
In the first set, Hüberli/Brunner looked to be comfortably ahead at 17:14, but then lost five points in a row against the tenacious Spaniards. This meant that the Swiss had to fend off two set points at 19:20 and 20:21. This time they succeeded and took the first chance at 22:21.
In the second round, Hubley/Brenner quickly took the lead 10:4. But it was not a walk. Fernandez/Soria narrowed the gap again. After 44 minutes, the Swiss duo ended the game with the third match point.
Now against the world champion
In the quarterfinals, Huberli/Brenner will face world champions Kelly Cheng/Sarah Hughes on Tuesday or Wednesday. The American duo defeated Italian duo Valentina Gottardi/Marta Menegati 21:18, 17:21, 15:12 on Sunday evening.
