PARIS: Singaporean world champion Maximilian Meder began his Olympic campaign with mixed results on Sunday (Aug 4), sitting third in the fleet after four races.
At the Marseilles pier, first-time Olympian Medel has accumulated eight net points after four races in the opening series. He trails Slovenia’s Toni Wrodisek (six points) and Austria’s Valentin Bontus (eight points).
Meder finished fifth in the first race, first in the second, second in the third, but failed to secure fourth.
The kitesurfing opening series will see up to 16 fleet races from Saturday to Wednesday, with the medal races set to begin on Thursday.
The opening series uses a low-point system similar to sailing competitions, awarding points based on the athlete’s final ranking. For example, an athlete who wins a race will receive one point.
The top two will advance directly to the finals, and the third to tenth place kitesurfers will compete in two semi-finals for the remaining final spots. The winner of each semi-final will advance to the finals.
In the finals, competitors need to win three games to receive the gold medal.
However, the top kitesurfer from the inaugural series had already won two finals and needed only one more to take home the gold medal.
The runner-up in the first match needs to win two matches to take home the gold medal, while the winner of the semifinal needs to win all three matches to take home the gold medal.
