SAINT-DENISE, France — Julian Alfred won Saint Lucia’s first Olympic medal. And not just any medal, but gold in the 100 meters, beating the favorite.
Alfred overtook American Shakari Richardson on a rain-soaked track on Saturday night, slowing the pace of the race.
Richardson won the silver medal. After Richardson suffered an apparent injury this month, Jamaica’s Sherika Jackson, the biggest challenger in the event, withdrew from the 100m to focus on the 200m. Then, less than two hours before the start of the race, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce issued a “no run” notice. It is not clear why the Jamaican, who had qualified for the semifinals, did not compete.
Saint Lucia first competed in the Olympic Games in 1996 in Atlanta.
Alfred will compete in the first round of the 200m on Sunday against Gabby Thomas, who won the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
