U.S. President Joe Biden said he hopes Iran will abandon the idea despite threatening to avenge the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, in Tehran, Reuters reported.
Regional tensions escalated on Wednesday following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, a day after Fuad Shukr, a senior military commander of Lebanon’s Shia Hezbollah group, which like Hamas is backed by Iran, was killed in an Israeli strike in Beirut.
Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of killing Haniyeh and, along with Hezbollah, have vowed revenge. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied involvement in Haniyeh’s murder.
Asked by reporters on Saturday whether Iran would back down, Biden responded: “I hope so. I don’t know.”
