19-year-old Tongan sprinter Maleselo Fukofuka made his Olympic debut in the men’s 100m preliminaries at the Paris Olympics, running a personal best of 12.11 seconds in group 5. Despite Fukofuka’s great efforts, he finished eighth in the preliminaries and failed to advance to the next round, as only the top two and next four fastest runners in each group qualify for the first round.
Earlier this year, Fukuko ran 12.57 seconds to finish eighth at the Oceania Track and Field Championships. His time in Paris ranked him 45th out of 45 runners in the preliminaries.

In the men’s 100m preliminaries, Haitian runner Christophe Borzol led with a time of 10.26 seconds. Jamaican runner Usain Bolt’s Olympic record of 9.63 seconds set in the London Olympics remains unbeaten.
Four other sprinters from the Pacific region competed. Fiji’s Waisake Tewa set a season’s best in 10.73 seconds, while Nauru’s Winzar Kaikouea clocked 11.15 seconds. Tuvalu’s Hepoiteloto Maibuca set a new national record in 11.30 seconds.
