The National Registration Bureau (NRB) revealed that more than 12 million citizens aged 16 and above have been registered since 2016, with a registration coverage rate of 103%, while the National Statistics Office (NSO) estimated the number to be 11.6 million.

The directorate has issued birth certificates to 3.2 million citizens below the age of 16, while the National Registration Department has registered 15.2 million citizens based on the total number of births and national identity cards.
Nepal Registration Department Chief Secretary Mphatso Sambo told reporters at a press conference in Lilongwe that the department was proud of the successful registration of the country’s citizens.
“This is a remarkable achievement and not many countries in the world can do this. We are proud of this achievement and are committed to continue to do our best to get everyone in this country registered,” he said.
Sambo added that the directorate will work tirelessly until every citizen has an identity document, whether it is a birth certificate or a national identity card, and that their mandate is to implement, coordinate, manage and maintain Malawi’s National Registration and Identification System (NRIS).
Sambo, however, denied allegations that the bureau was registering minors for national identity cards, saying the allegations were only aimed at discrediting the NRB.
Meanwhile, the National Registration Department also said it will soon begin a pilot program for marriage registration in the country. Sambo said the department is only waiting for amendments to the National Registration Act and the Marriage, Divorce and Family Relations Act.
“Currently, the process of handing over the function is at an advanced stage,” he said.
Sambo stressed that the NRB has been mandated to register every marriage in the country.
