in a Previous articleI discussed the need to expand the scope of civilian protection beyond El Fasher, as outlined in UN Security Council Resolution 2736. Although direct attacks have decreased, likely due to tactical maneuvers by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) aimed at regrouping rather than complying with the resolution, the capital of North Darfur remains under siege.
The Rapid Support Forces have strategically opened southwestern exits to direct displaced civilians towards Zam Zam camp and other areas. However, this controlled exodus has a sinister purpose: Zam Zam has become a hub for the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people, who have fled more than 80 communities in El Fasher. This massive displacement has created a humanitarian crisis, with residents facing cash shortages and high costs for financial transactions.
Meanwhile, the Rapid Support Forces tightened their grip on El Fasher. Heavy charges were imposed on goods entering through Hazan Jadid, severely limiting access to basic supplies. This calculated strategy led to food shortages and skyrocketing prices, plunging the city into famine.
After the death of Major General Ali Yaqob, the RSF reorganized under the leadership of Prince Abdul Rahman Al-Kabro and launched fierce attacks on important targets such as livestock markets and Saudi hospitals. Unfortunately, the death toll has exceeded 80, and medical services are collapsing due to lack of protection and medicines.
The hypocrisy of the Rapid Support Forces was clear: they paid lip service to providing humanitarian aid in Geneva, but their actions on the ground exposed their carefully planned strategy to starve and bombard El Fasher into submission, in flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolutions on the protection of civilians.
The international community must not take this lightly. The Sudan Emergency Assistance Force must immediately cease its attacks on civilians and lift the siege on El Fasher and other cities. The Sudanese Armed Forces must allow unimpeded humanitarian access.
The UN Security Council must implement its resolution and expand protected areas to include other affected areas such as Sennar and Suki. The upcoming rainy season threatens to exacerbate the crisis. Urgent action is needed to prevent further disasters.
