The new communication system automates call management and monitoring, reducing the workload of police officers.
The Namibian Correctional Services (NCS) has partnered with Telio Communications Namibia to implement a communications system that enables prisoners at the Windhoek Women’s Correctional Facility to communicate with their legal representatives.
The system provides appropriate support, leading to fairer treatment and better outcomes in legal proceedings.
NCS Commissioner Leonard Mahundu, on behalf of NCS Commissioner Raphael Hamunyela, said last week that the Telio system helps ensure that all calls are retrieved. In cases where irregularities are suspected, the system can provide a clear deterrent to prisoners abusing the system.
Essentially, with many correctional institutions short-staffed, the telio system can automatically manage and monitor calls, reducing the workload on officers. This automation alleviates the need for officers to monitor inmate communications, allowing them to focus on other important tasks within the institution.
According to the commissioner, it will also enable prisoners to maintain essential contact with family and friends. “These relationships provide vital emotional support. Regular calls with loved ones can reduce feelings of loneliness, anxiety and depression.”
The system is the product of teamwork, collaboration and dedication of numerous individuals and stakeholders who share a common belief and commitment to improving the lives of prisoners.
The main goal of NCS is to rehabilitate prisoners and reintegrate them into law-abiding citizens and works with key stakeholders to achieve this goal effectively.
