Hanoi: Vietnamese President To Lin was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam on Saturday (Aug 3), the country’s highest post, replacing Nguyen Phu Trong, who died two weeks ago.
Due to Nguyen Phu Trong’s deteriorating health, Carrie Lam took over as Secretary of the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam on July 18, the day before Nguyen Phu Trong’s death.
Officials told a news conference that party delegates unanimously supported Lam’s nomination.
In his speech to delegates, he vowed to carry forward Nguyen Phu Trong’s legacy by not changing the Southeast Asian country’s foreign policy, focusing on achieving socio-economic development goals and “resolutely” continuing Vietnam’s anti-corruption campaign.
Vietnam does not have an official supreme leader, but the party leader actually plays a more prominent role than others since Nguyen Phu Trong strengthened his power during his 13-year term.
Lam, a career security official, has long been seen as aiming to become party secretary, with experts saying the presidency is a stepping stone to the top job.
He was elected president in May after leading a massive anti-corruption campaign while police minister. He replaced Vu Van Thang, who resigned after about a year in the post amid unspecified allegations of misconduct.
