Labour has been in poor form recently, and the loss of one of two seats it has held for decades was seen as a reason to breathe a sigh of relief. Both by-elections held yesterday were triggered by the resignation of centrist MPs who were disillusioned with the direction of Labour under Jeremy Corbyn. Labour won Copeland in Stoke Central with a lower share of the vote (from 39% to 37%), while the Conservatives rose by 8 points to 44%. The Labour leader’s past opposition to nuclear power (a major employer in the Cumbrian constituency) and his party’s confused stance on Brexit (the constituency voted to leave the European Union) were factors in the result.
