Pago Pago – American Samoa

At 12:35 am on June 20, 2024, the owners of K&B Mart in Futiga called the Tafuna Police Station for help because a drunk man attacked one of their employees.

According to government records, when police arrived at the store, the owner explained that a man had gone to buy beer, however, because it was past the scheduled time (10 p.m.), he was allowed to buy more beer, a request that was denied.

The store owner stated that their employee went to order the defendant to leave the store, but the defendant refused, but he grabbed the employee by the shirt, hit him in the face, and ran away. The store owner mentioned that the defendant smelled like beer.

An employee of the store where the defendant was attacked corroborated the owner’s account.

That night, police were unable to view the store’s camera footage because, as the store owner said, only their manager could turn on the camera footage.

Although the police did not see any injuries to the victim, they asked him if he needed emergency medical services. The clerk replied that he did not.

The security officer asked the store staff to show where the defendant went after leaving the store. The staff pointed to the defendant walking towards a hill near the US Mart store in Futiga.

The police continued their investigation and went to the US Mart store and asked the man who was seen there if he had seen the defendant, the man replied that yes, they had been seen together at the time of the accident. The name of the defendant, Mr. Charlie Ekuta, was also confirmed there.

The witness explained that he and Charlie went to the K&B store to buy some cigarettes, but Charlie went to ask the store owner if he could buy a cigarette for $1, but the store owner refused and ordered the defendant to go out of the store because the sun was shining and it affected other customers.

At this point Ekuta got angry and grabbed the shop owner’s clothes, but the shop owner punched him and the two began to fight. Witnesses said Ekuta urged him to get out. Then they left the store separately.

The security personnel asked witnesses to point to Ekuta’s house and when the police went there, they saw a man walking in another direction and the police saw the same face with a portable photo of Ekuta in his hand. The police then locked him up and the police also smelled a strong smell of beer on the accused.

The police and Ekuta returned to the store where the incident occurred so that the owner and workers could confirm that the man who attacked the workers was real. When the store employees confirmed Ekuta’s identity, he was taken to the police station.

Ekuta has been charged with one count of third degree assault, a Class “A” misdemeanor punishable by one (1) year in prison or a $1,000 fine, or both.

The defendant was released on $1,000 bail, awaiting trial.
