Chinese warships have recently been spotted sailing near the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska, while naval vessels have begun calling at a military port Beijing is building in Cambodia.
While both events occurred in different parts of the globe, they are both part of important geopolitical developments – ones that could lead to global war.
That may sound alarmist. But as I explain in my book Near and Far Seas: The Geopolitics of Sea Power, the dynamics of today’s China seeking to surpass the United States as the world’s leading maritime power mirror those of the past—and have led to some of the world’s most important conflicts.
