KOOR, Palau — President Surangel Whipps Jr. issued two presidential directives in July raising the special prosecutor’s salary to $125,000 and the public auditor’s salary to $100,000.
The directives implement Articles 28 and 29 of the 2024 RPPL 11-34 Supplemental Budget, which became law on June 5.
The law authorizes the president to increase the salaries of special prosecutors and public auditors within 60 days of the law’s enactment. The law does not set a cap on the salaries, which are determined at the president’s discretion. Once established, these salaries will apply to all future special prosecutors and public auditors and can only be increased or decreased by law.
The position remained vacant for more than six months due to a lack of applicants when former special prosecutor April Dawn Cripps left in July 2023. Attorney General Ernestine Rengiil said the salary offered was too low to attract candidates.
