The NICO Group, led by the National Bank and Nico Life, has provided K35 million in funding for this year’s Umthetho Cultural Festival.
Umthetho is a cultural festival of the Mzimba Ngonis people, celebrated annually at the foot of Mount Hora.
Speaking after handing over the cheque on behalf of NICO Group on Tuesday, National Bank Chief Executive Officer Kwanele Ngwenya said the group’s decision to sponsor the event was motivated by its strong commitment to community development, cultural preservation and social responsibility.
“At NICO Group, we recognize the profound importance of cultural heritage in shaping identity and fostering solidarity. By supporting this event, we aim to contribute to the preservation and promotion of these precious cultural practices that define our collective identity.”
“This sponsorship is part of our larger initiative, One NICO Xpression, which reflects our vision of unity, diversity and growing together. By donating K35 million to the Umthetho ceremony, we are demonstrating our commitment to these values and enriching our cultural heritage,” said Ngwenya.
Emma Kaliya, chairperson of the 2024 Umthetho Organising Committee, accepted the funds on behalf of the Mzimba Heritage Association (MZIHA) and thanked the organisation for the kind gesture.
“On behalf of the International Peace Association of Malawi, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to NICO Group for their generous donation. We are pleased to announce that NICO Group will be the main sponsor of our upcoming event which is expected to attract 3500-5000 people from all parts of Malawi as well as neighbouring countries such as Tanzania, Zambia and South Africa,” said Kaliya.
Some of the activities of this year’s Umthetho festival include workshops for chiefs, women and youths, as well as cultural days, with the main celebration taking place on August 3, 2024.
His Majesty the Zulu King MisuZulu Ka Zwelithini is expected to attend the ceremony.
The theme of the festival celebrations is “United to fight climate change under the ten-year rule of Inkosi Ya Makosi Mbewa V”.
