The Maritime Intelligence Group determined the ship’s return route from Reunion Island.
In a joint operation, the ADSU and the National Coast Guard (NCG) intercepted a suspicious tourist boat approximately 13 nautical miles off the coast of Tamarindo. The intervention was carried out on board a white and blue Legend 33-type vessel equipped with two 300 hp Mercury outboard engines.
The two passengers on board, Rodney Christopher Meunier, 30, a fisherman from Baie-du-Tombeau, Florida, and Désiré Jeff Cliff Joséphine, 34, a captain from Les Salines, Port Louis, were arrested. During the search, marijuana pellets were found on board.
The two admitted that they went to Reunion Island to obtain about 50 kg of marijuana, worth 75 million rupees, and then threw it into the sea along with mobile phones to avoid detection. In addition, two harpoon rifles purchased in Reunion were seized. The ship’s documents were not up to date, which constituted another violation. A temporary file was established for the attempted import of drugs.
Authorities also revealed that according to the suspects’ confessions, around the same time, another speedboat travelled to Reunion Island on behalf of an unidentified group, possibly for another supplier. A thorough investigation is currently underway to dismantle this drug trafficking network and identify all those involved.
A forensic examiner and a police photographer were sent to the scene to record the incident.
