The Netherlands also won gold in the rowing finals on day three. This time Ymkje Clevering and Veronique Meester delivered. While the Dutch gold was somewhat exciting the day before yesterday and certainly nerve-wracking yesterday, today was pretty straightforward.
Clavering and Meister immediately got off to a good start and were soon ahead of the Australian ladies. After just 500 meters, the lead was considerable, and after 1000 meters it seemed impossible for the boat to catch up with the second-placed Australian team. After that, Clavering and Meister were not far behind, but the opponents were clearly not catching up either: the gap remained around 4 seconds. The final race was still exciting, but the focus was on the medals behind the Dutch ladies. Australia and Romania had a fierce battle for the silver medal, which was eventually won by the Romanian team.
There will be another medal opportunity tomorrow on the final rowing day. Karolien Florijn looks to be the top contender to ensure the Netherlands win at least 1 rowing gold medal per day, but Simon van Dorp and Holland Acht can still get in the water and fight for a medal chance
