Students in Puntarenas were forced to attend classes remotely due to the suspension of drinking water supplies caused by contamination of the Barranca River.
The school canteen will remain closed while the river is gradually cleaned.
This is evidenced by recent laboratory results shared by the Costa Rican Aqueduct and Sewerage Institute (AyA).
But the level of contamination remains severe and the drinking water supply cannot be restored.
This situation has forced the Ministry of Public Education (MEP) to offer distance learning at preschool, school and university levels.
The Ministry of Environmental Protection stated that the directors of each education center will make decisions to ensure the restoration, continuity and completion of the measure based on the specific conditions of the education center.
School canteens will remain closed until the AyA authorizes drinking water.
The measure applies to: Esparza state: Macacona, Nances, San Roque, Marañonal, Espíritu Santo (Esparza Center), Paraíso, San Juan Grande district, Esparzol neighborhood, San Juan Oeste.
Central state of Puntarenas: Barranca district and the communities of Carmen Lyra, El Llano, San Joaquín, Augusto Colombari, Libertad 81, Riojalandia, Los Almendros, Juanito Mora, Manuel Mora, El Progreso, Boulevard del Sol, El Roble, La Jiret, El Chaguit, San Luis, Chacarita, Carrizal, November 20 and Frey Casiano.
These measures will last until August 9, or until drinking water supply is restored.
