After more than two months of humanitarian aid being hampered by rampant gang violence, United Nations has finally succeeded in delivering basic food supplies to extremely vulnerable people in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has played a critical role in these efforts, overcoming significant obstacles to deliver much-needed relief supplies.
Resumption of humanitarian flights
The World Food Programme recently resumed flights to Port-au-Prince International Airport, marking a critical turning point in the delivery of aid supplies.
Jean-Martin Bauer, WFP Country Director in Haiti, stressed that this progress has enabled access to some of the most challenging neighbourhoods in the capital, although the security situation remains extremely complex.

Over a two-week period in May, WFP distributed 615 metric tons of rice, beans and vegetable oil, benefiting nearly 93,000 residents of the hard-hit area of Cité Soleil.

This assistance is critical to supporting nursing mothers and children who are most affected by the crisis.
In addition, critical medical supplies recently arrived at Port-au-Prince airport, marking the first UN humanitarian cargo flight to the city since March 2024, when political and economic unrest in the country led to an escalation of violence.
Enhanced access required
Despite these successes, further efforts are needed to ensure access to the seaport in Port-au-Prince.

Power stressed the importance of these routes to keep aid flowing, warning that without them the risk of people falling into deeper hunger would increase.
