Shared transportation service Uber and BYD announced a partnership yesterday that will bring 100,000 electric vehicles from the Chinese manufacturer to the Uber platform in Europe and Latin America.

The deal will provide Uber drivers with preferential pricing, insurance, financing and other services for BYD vehicles, the companies said in a statement.

There are plans to expand the partnership to the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.

The two companies said the agreement will help accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, and they also plan to work together to launch self-driving electric vehicles on the Uber platform.

BYD, China’s largest electric vehicle manufacturer, has been rapidly expanding its presence in the global market since it began producing electric and hybrid vehicles exclusively in 2022.

The rapid rise of China’s low-cost electric vehicles is shaking up the global auto industry in a way not seen since the arrival of Japanese manufacturers during the 1970s oil crisis.
