SINGAPORE: Three weeks ago, Mr David Andrada was heading home from his routine jog at Tanjong Beach when he spotted a few otters in an “unusual” spot next to the sidewalk.
“I stopped about four metres away from them and waited for them to run away and go somewhere else. I wouldn’t get close because I knew wild animals were dangerous,” the restaurant owner and Sentosa Cove resident recalled.
What happened next shocked him.
“One of them suddenly turned around and walked straight towards me, and the other two followed,” the Australian told CNA.
As Mr Andrada backed away, he fell into some bushes and the otter started biting him.
“One of them, the one leading the charge, actually got close to my face… In self-defense, I tried to push it away, but it bit my finger along the way. I managed to push them away though,” he said.
The otter then returned to a nearby body of water. Mr Andrada sought help from a nearby gardener and was eventually taken to Singapore General Hospital for treatment.
“I was covered in blood. I couldn’t feel my fingers at that point, so I was a little worried,” he said.
The accident left him with huge wounds on his thighs, calves and fingers, for which he underwent a three-hour operation and required 10 stitches and a tetanus shot.
Although he had health insurance, he ended up being hospitalized for only five days and racked up a massive hospital bill in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Doctors said it could take six months for his finger to heal.
