Faizabad constituency elected Singh to parliament twice, in 2014 and 2019, when Modi’s party won 71 and 62 seats in India’s most populous state of Uttar Pradesh.
The latest update from the Election Commission showed the BJP’s tally in the state shrunk to 33 seats, leading analysts to focus on unemployment and high inflation – two issues that surveys show are top concerns for voters, outweighing religious beliefs.
“We are happy with the temple but people are tired of the BJP,” said Rakesh Yadav, president of the Ayodhya Freemen’s Association, a traders’ group.
He said small business owners were angry that their shops were demolished during the reconstruction process before the inauguration of the Ayodhya temple and they were given less compensation than they expected.
“People are not always swayed by caste or temple-mosque politics. They also want to see development, which is why the results may surprise us all,” he added.
The Ram temple was built on a Supreme Court order after decades of bloody dispute. In 1992, a group of Hindus demolished a 16th-century mosque on the site, claiming it was built on the birthplace of the god king.
