Apia, Samoa – July 29, 2024 – Hundreds of members of the Marist Brothers Old Pupils Association (MBOPA) attended Mass this morning to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Marist Brothers School, which has produced many of Samoa’s leading leaders in various fields.
The opening Mass was held at the iconic Lipea Diocesan Cathedral and was attended by alumni from Samoa, American Samoa and MBOPA affiliated associations alumni from New Zealand and Australia. Those present included former Prime Minister and Head of State Tupua Tamasese Efe and several senior members in their octogenarian years.

After the Mass, the celebrations transitioned to a cultural welcome with the Ava ceremony at the Alafuya Centennial Hall.
The week-long celebrations will begin with a Marist parade/parade tomorrow (Tuesday 30 July) at 09:00am on Beach Road and a Marist Forum for all MBOPA members to explore how to “strengthen Marist education in Samoa”.
Welcome Ava Ceremony
There will be a variety of activities taking place each day, including various competitions between the various colleges, such as the Pacific Ezy Va’a Outrigger Regatta, darts and pool games, the Marist Fair and Career Day, the online Tausala fundraiser, the 2024 MBOPA Centennial Golf Championship and the Marist Music Festival.
Closing events include a Marist Excellence in Service Awards corporate dinner on Saturday, with celebrations concluding with a Mass and farewell ceremony on Sunday.
Funds raised from the Centennial Celebration will go towards aiding Marist education and facilities in Samoa.
