Alenka Bratušek warns that road infrastructure must be more resistant to water

Minister of Infrastructure Alanka Bratusek During her visit to the Saviniska Valley, she reminded that on August 4 last year, about 2,000 kilometers of national roads were flooded, equivalent to one-third of the entire national road network.

Most of the roads in the Saviniska Valley and Carinthia were destroyed by the floods. Within a year, the transportability of almost the entire network was guaranteed, with only eight kilometers of roads still partially closed, she added. The first intervention to repair the state roads cost 75 million euros, and the repair of the entire road network after the floods will cost 508 million euros. 308 million euros have been allocated for the reconstruction of roads in these areas, and about 120 million euros for the reconstruction of bridges, the four collapsed bridges and the remaining bridges, so that something like this does not happen again.

“All bridges are standing temporarily. The bridges in Kamnik or Stachovitsa were designed earlier, so coordination with the water authorities was necessary and they are already under construction. The bridge in Kamnik Bistrica has ongoing projects or modifications, but the biggest challenge is the bridge in Otiške Vrh, which needs to be redesigned due to a higher assessment of the water situation.” she says.

She is pleased with the speed of recovery.

The minister was very pleased with the speed with which the road network was repaired, especially in Struga, where despite floods damaging the roads, traffic was restored in less than a month.

“Now comes the part where we are restoring and rebuilding the roads. This will take a little more time because all the projects that have been completed or planned are being checked again with the water workers so that the infrastructure to be built will be more resistant to water.”, Alenka Bratusek told Slovenian TV.

Work hampered by new weather inconveniences

Work has been hampered by new weather inconveniences and safety must be observed. She said more will be known after today’s talks on the 2025 and 2026 budgets. “I wish things would go faster. Our goal is to have everything that needs to be done in these areas done in a few years. Then the projects we are preparing now will come. Flood recovery is a priority this year and for the next two years,” she says.

According to her, significant progress was made in the development of the third axis last year. “Almost all building permits from Velenyi to Slovenska Gradac have been obtained, and now we are working to get the building permit from Centrupet to Velenyi as soon as possible.” She added that at the beginning of June, the third development axis in Gradac, Slovenia was unveiled to the public, and in the autumn we plan to extend the last section to Austria.
