Farewell to an Idol: The End of the Jaguar Temple Nightclub

This morning, the iconic jaguar with its mouth open, marking the entrance to the Temple of the Jaguar nightclub, began its final journey. A demolition crew began dismantling the legendary building, which for many years had been a cornerstone of the island’s nightlife. However, before it became a nightclub, the building had a rich history on the island.

The story begins at the Arenas Theater, San Pedro’s first movie theater. Originally located on the site of the old Patio de Fido, the theater was largely relocated to its current location. More than just a place to watch movies, the Arenas Theater is a cultural center where local groups perform plays and school events are held on its spacious stage. After the cinema closed, the building found new life as an arcade game venue, selling snacks and entertaining the island’s youth. It then became Tarzan Nightclub, the predecessor of the legendary Jaguar Nightclub, and eventually the Jaguar Temple Nightclub. This popular corner also housed another popular bar called The Rehab Lounge. Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic greatly contributed to the closure of the nightclub. Despite multiple attempts to revive it, efforts were in vain, leading to today’s demolition.

“It is indeed bittersweet to demolish such an iconic building. The building has a rich history and was originally a theater. Now we have decided to demolish the building because it is in such a bad condition. We have no concrete plans at this time, but we are exploring various options for our next project. I can tell you this much. While the Jaguar Temple has built a name for itself, we intend to preserve it as a brand for future buildings.”

– Pete Salazar Jr. commented.

As we say goodbye to Temple of the Jaguar, we remember more than just a nightclub, but a building that has quietly witnessed the evolution, adaptation and change of the island’s social landscape. Its legacy will live on in the memories of those who experienced it from cinema to nightclub and everything in between.
