German tennis star Alexander Zverev can continue his championship quest at the French Open in Paris after another five-set thriller. The 27-year-old won his match in the round of 16 with a 4:6, 6:1, 5:7, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2 win over Dane Holger Lund and has now reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the fourth time in a row on clay.
Zverev’s hard-fought victory on Tuesday night at Court Philippe Chatrier after 4 minutes and 11 seconds was not confirmed until 1:40 a.m. In the third round, the Olympic champion avoided an imminent exit against Dutchman Taron Grikspoor in five sets.
In the quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Hamburg native will face Australian Alex de Minaur, who surprisingly defeated Russian fifth-ranked Daniil Medvedev 4:6, 6:2, 6:1, 6:3 on the same day.
“I think it’s a dangerous match for Sasha,” predicted Eurosport expert Boris Becker, who trained Rooney until February, before the first serve. The Dane also had a very varied performance with many changes of pace; in the only clay-court showdown in Munich in 2022, he used the same tactics to unsettle Zverev.
After losing the first set, Zverev gave up his slight passivity and his previously weak second serve stabilized.
