USA/Jordan Goudreau, a former U.S. military member who plotted to overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in 2020, was arrested in New York on Tuesday on charges of arms trafficking, according to judicial sources.
Goudreau, 48, a former U.S. Army Special Forces member known as a “Green Beret,” is accused of attempting to launch an “armed invasion” of Venezuela with Colombian Venezuelan resident Yassi Alexandra Alvarez to overthrow Maduro.
A court in Tampa, Florida, accused them of violating U.S. gun control laws and exporting weapons of war such as AR, night vision devices and lasers without relevant export licenses.
According to court documents, following an arrest warrant issued by the court on July 17, Goudreau was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in New York on July 30 and is currently being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
The so-called “Operation Gideon” in which Goudreau participated was aimed at invading Venezuela by sea from Colombia and overthrowing Maduro.
Venezuelan authorities said eight “mercenaries” died in clashes with the military, while another 29 were sentenced to 21 to 30 years in prison by the Venezuelan judicial system in May last year.
Two Americans, Luke Denman and Airan Berry, who were sentenced to 20 years in prison in the case, were released from prison and transferred to their country in a prisoner swap, and Colombian Alex Saab, a government contractor accused of being a “front man” for Maduro, was freed.
