Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to meet with Councilman Jose Castellanos, and we spoke in depth about traffic congestion and the need for speed bumps on our beloved island. As we all know, navigating the busy streets of San Pedro can sometimes be daunting, as vehicles are packed into every corner and speeding becomes all too common.

But here’s the good news: City Council is taking proactive steps to tackle these issues head-on. One of the most visible changes? The installation of new speed bumps at strategic locations around town. Currently, four speed bumps have been installed along the Esplanade, next to the Poly Clinic, at the entrance to the San Pedrito area and at Ambergris Caye Elementary School (ACES), designed to curb speeding and promote safer driving habits on the newly paved roads.

Castellanos shared the City Council’s approach, highlighting their responsiveness to resident feedback and concerns. With an increase in accidents and an influx of construction trucks adding to traffic congestion, it was clear that action was needed to ensure safe roads.

Mayor Wally Nunez echoed those sentiments, reaffirming his commitment to road safety for all. As we address these challenges, he assured residents that the City Council is committed to implementing systemic measures to improve traffic flow and safety.

But the initiatives don’t stop there. The San Pedro Transportation Department has been hard at work rolling out officer training programs, implementing breathalyzer testing to address drunk driving, and strengthening licensing procedures. Additionally, they plan to improve parking facilities, work with trucking companies for smoother transportation, and explore environmentally friendly transportation solutions to reduce carbon emissions.

As we move forward, Mayor Núñez encourages residents to stay engaged and proactive by reporting any concerns and monitoring official channels for updates. Together, we can create a safer, more efficient road network for the benefit of all.
